Question(s) for Reflection

If someone asked you, what is “sin,” how would you respond?

How does one become “free” of sin?

Scripture: 

1 John 1:8-10

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 

I am sure all of us remember the good ol’ “Sinner’s Prayer” often found in Gospel tracts. Some of us may have even prayed it when we decided to follow Jesus. 

 

Read the following prayer aloud:

"Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior. In Your Name. Amen." (From wikipedia.com) 

How do you feel after speaking those words? Do you believe the words you just spoke? What comes next?

This week, we will explore the concept of “sin” and how we might define it. But we won’t stay there! Our focus will be on how Jesus reconciled and continues to reconcile us with God so that we might live the good and beautiful life God intends for all of creation.
