EIBC Devotional #19 - “The Seasons of Life”
Emerald Isle Baptist Church
Pastor Zach Emory
Scripture - Psalm 31:14-16
14 But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, ‘You are my God.’
15 My times are in your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.
16 Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love.
As the temperature gets cooler and the leaves begin to change, we are reminded that we live a life of seasons. The sun creeps into the sky to light the Earth for “day,” and then it recedes to make way for the moon for “night.” Flowers begin to spring up to paint the earth before withering away in the harshness of winter. Generations of human beings are marked by their clothes, hairstyles, music, and other preferences before a new generation comes along to change the status quo. We as individuals come into the world utterly naked and dependent, grow up to become an independent adult, and then our bodies begin to weaken before eventually dying. We live a life of seasons. This Psalm reminds us that despite the changing of the times, our times are securely in the hand of God. While our circumstances and even we ourselves may change, God does not change, and His steadfast love is a testament to that. Whether we are in a season of rejoicing or mourning, illness or health, pain or comfort, God is right there alongside us, remaining a constant source on which we might rely.
Questions for Reflection
How would you describe the current season of life in which you find yourself?
How might you make peace with the fact that nothing, good or bad, lasts forever?
Prayer -
Heavenly Father, we thank You for winter because it reminds us of spring, we thank You for age because it reminds us of youth, and we thank You for darkness because it may give way to Your Light. Amen.
