EIBC Devotional #1 - “Christ as the Cornerstone”

Emerald Isle Baptist Church

Pastor Zach Emory

Question(s) for Reflection

What organizations have you been a part of? What was the foundational precept/theme/mission that united members of the organization together?

What makes EIBC different from those organizations? Think deeply! The answer is more than just “Jesus.”

Scripture: Isaiah 28:16-17

16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone,

    a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;

the one who relies on it

    will never be stricken with panic.

17 I will make justice the measuring line

    and righteousness the plumb line;

hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie,

    and water will overflow your hiding place.

The purpose of the cornerstone in ancient construction was three-fold:

  1. Guide - it was the reference point by which all the other stones were aligned
  2. Unify - it joined all the other stones together as a cohesive whole
  3. Support - it provided strength and structural integrity

The prophet Isaiah tells us that “justice and righteousness” are the standards by which God’s cornerstone is laid and measured. What does justice and righteousness mean to you?

This Sunday, we will explore how Jesus fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy as the cornerstone and what it means for both EIBC and the global Church.
